Withering Realms is a horror action RPG set in an alternate 1926, a decade after a catastrophic supernatural rupture brought the Great War to an abrupt end and permanently rewrote the rules of reality. Corpses no longer stay buried, restless spirits drift through the countryside, and a small number of people have gained the ability to work genuine magic. The world that emerged from that rupture is a grim, half-ruined place where superstition has become practical knowledge.

The story follows Clover, a nine-year-old girl who wakes up alone inside a crumbling mansion situated only a short distance from where the occult disaster originated. She quickly learns an unsettling truth about her own condition: she is no longer among the living. Her sole ally is an unnerving doll assembled from wood, metal, and human bone, a construct of considerable power that serves as her guardian. Together the pair set out to find some method of restoring Clover to life.

Exploration centers on the town of Penwyll and the enormous burial grounds that ring it. The pair delve into tombs, underground caverns, and decaying country estates in search of loot, crafting components, and magical relics. The wider map is gated by enormous guardian creatures stationed along its borders, and defeating these towering entities opens up fresh territory to investigate.

The doll’s missing right arm functions as the core of the combat system. Players build weapons and mechanical contraptions to fit into that empty socket, ranging from an enchanted candelabrum and a swinging chain rock to more anachronistic hardware such as a machinegun or a flamethrower. Salvaged materials feed into upgrades, encouraging repeat visits to earlier locations. Those visits change substantially after dark: any region revisited at night hosts different, far more dangerous inhabitants along with secrets that never surface in daylight.

Penwyll’s residents play into the narrative as well. Clover can recruit companions such as Althea, a freelance investigator determined to expose whatever the town is hiding, using methods that include interrogating witnesses, picking locks, and forging documents. These alliances open alternative routes through the mystery and add investigative problem-solving alongside the fighting.
