Dissolution of My Self is a point-and-click psychological horror narrative built around a single confined location and the slow unravelling of one man’s sense of self. The story follows Hector, a prince of a kingdom that no longer exists, who now lives in a cramped rented apartment far from anything he once ruled. Stripped of homeland, title and any plausible future, he has arrived at a decision: rather than continue carrying his past, he intends to erase it. The player’s role is not to save him but to assist in that dismantling, object by object and memory by memory.
The apartment appears unremarkable at first glance, which is precisely the point. Windows, a television set, dining chairs, medicine bottles and other pieces of ordinary furnishing each carry a residue of something that happened in this room or before it. Clicking on an item surfaces a fragment of Hector’s recollection, and those fragments accumulate into a portrait of an intimate, quietly authoritarian relationship. The narration is deliberately unreliable — Hector’s account of any given event bends according to his mood at the moment of telling, so the same history can be recounted with tenderness, contempt or evasion depending on when it surfaces.
The second figure in this story is Matvey, Hector’s uncle and former aide, who escaped alongside him under a false identity and now keeps them both afloat through unlicensed electrical work. The bond between them refuses to settle into a single shape: guardian and dependent, sovereign and servant, caretaker and patient, something closer to a marriage than either would name aloud. That ambiguity supplies most of the game’s tension. The horror here comes from confinement, exile, codependence and the slow rot of familial devotion rather than from creatures or sudden shocks, and there is no combat to interrupt the atmosphere.
Exploration order is left largely to the player, and what gets touched first is what Hector remembers first, reshaping the rhythm and sequence in which the text unfolds. The narrative resolves toward one conclusion, and in-game choices shape the reading experience rather than branching into alternate routes. As memories are triggered and subsequently surrendered, the corresponding objects begin to blur and lose their function, so the room itself visibly hollows out in step with its occupant. Both leads are fully voiced, and the writing carries a streak of bleak humour alongside its oppressive tone.
Overall, Dissolution of My Self offers a compact, text-driven horror experience for players drawn to fragmented storytelling, object investigation and studies of pathological dependence. It trades jumpscares for sustained unease and asks its audience to sit with an uncomfortable, deeply unequal relationship as it comes apart.
