Plains of Pain is a survival sandbox set on a scorched Earth where the sun itself has become the primary threat. In its fiction, a cascade of massive solar flares consumed the inner planets before turning on Earth, boiling away water and breaking civilization apart. The wealthy and powerful escaped through a covert evacuation program, abandoning everyone else to the heat. What remains is a parched expanse of ruins, dust, and scattered survivors, many of whom have lost their sanity entirely and now wander the deadlands scavenging for scraps.

Players enter this world as an anonymous drifter with no history and no allies. Staying alive means tracking a demanding set of survival needs: thirst, hunger, heat stress, fatigue, radiation, and biohazard exposure all tick away in the background, while environmental events such as overheat surges and meteor showers punctuate the routine. Bandits and hostile scavengers roam freely, and downed enemies can be searched for supplies, though limited carrying capacity forces constant decisions about what is worth keeping.

Crafting and construction form the backbone of long-term progress. Modular building pieces allow anything from a modest shelter to a sprawling settlement, with water purification units, workbenches, barracks, and defensive towers unlocked through blueprints found in ruins, purchased from merchants, or looted. Settlements that receive steady food and water attract wastelanders, and a growing population activates production buildings and defensive garrisons, though larger communities also draw heavier raids from roaming mobs. Enormous hordes of heat-maddened Lowlifes are pulled toward noise and activity, making fortification a practical necessity rather than decoration.

Distance is handled through anti-gravity hover vehicles assembled from recovered blueprints. Each craft carries its own storage space and fuel requirements, and can be upgraded for speed, acceleration, armor, and durability, opening up the remoter corners of the map. Two rival factions contest the outposts holding rare resources, each convinced its vision for humanity is the correct one. Reputation determines how much influence a survivor holds, and a sufficiently trusted individual can seize outposts on a faction’s behalf and shift the regional balance of power. Traders belonging to each faction operate from camps and hidden waypoints, dealing in the common currency of Rusty Nuts and offering courier contracts for extra income.

Character development runs on experience earned through combat, building, trading, looting, and quest completion, with each level granting a point to invest in health, regeneration, melee output, stealth, critical strikes, firearm accuracy, or merchant pricing. Quests from wandering NPCs also raise skill ceilings.
