Lumi treats the desktop itself as a playground: she strolls along the lower edge of the monitor, scales the sides of open application windows, dangles from title bars, and perches on window frames while other programs run underneath her. When activity slows down, she settles in for a nap or wanders off to entertain herself, giving the impression of a tiny resident rather than a static overlay.

Her movement set covers a wide range of motion, from casual walking to full sprints that end in a skidding stop and a small cloud of dust. Window surfaces, ceilings and edges all act as climbable terrain, and she will occasionally leap from a title bar simply because the opportunity is there. Idle moments are filled with head tilts, humming accompanied by floating musical notes, small hops, and quiet mumbling to herself. Altogether the character is animated through 64 distinct behaviours built from 122 individually drawn frames.

Interaction happens through the mouse. Rubbing the top of her head turns the cursor into a hand and produces a happy reaction, while clicking prompts a greeting. She can be lifted, shaken and tossed across the display, summoned to the cursor from the tray icon, or given specific commands through a right-click menu. Collectible credits occasionally fall from the top of the screen, and Lumi will run over to gather them with a chime.

Progression is built around an affection system that advances through six stages based on time spent together and attention given, unlocking additional lines of dialogue along the way, alongside fifty in-app achievements tracking milestones from the first greeting to long-term credit collecting. Practical tools sit beside the playfulness: a focus mode calms her down during work, a built-in Pomodoro timer shifts her between focus and break periods automatically, alarms trigger a siren and a frantic run across the screen, hourly announcements can be enabled, and registered shortcuts let her perform frequent desktop actions on request. She hides herself automatically in front of full-screen applications so games and screen sharing stay uninterrupted.

Multiple copies can be summoned at once, and groups of Lumis will chat, high-five, trade credits, march in formation and play tag together. Optional extras include a bongo-playing desk variant that drums along with typing, a floating garden of drawable islands and ladders, a physics puzzle mode using platforms and trampolines, and a window-throwing routine. Community-made characters can also walk alongside her.
