Through the Woods is a third-person 3D adventure game. The three-dimensional game environment is calculated in real time by the Unity engine. The camera is positioned behind the head of the protagonist Karen. The player controls Karen through the game world with the mouse and the WASD keys, with the camera always following her. Exploring the enchanted island takes up most of the game. The game world is largely freely accessible, areas not intended for exploration are blocked by barriers such as rocks, fences or bodies of water. When Karen approaches an

object that she can examine or manipulate, the interaction option appears on screen and can be triggered with a button press. There is no inventory like in classic adventures; Karen only has a flashlight to explore dark rooms and the ability to sneak. Fighting with potential opponents must be avoided by Karen avoiding them at large or sneaking past them. Occasionally, Karen will find notes that provide clues to the history of the island and thus the backstory of the game.

Through reactive narration, the player experiences the mother’s re-telling of the events surrounding her son’s disappearance. Players follow the path of a terrified woman who has forced herself to enter this terrible place for the sole purpose of finding her son, in a setting heavily influenced by Norse mythology and Norwegian folk tales.
