Half-swording is the practice of gripping the sword’s blade with one hand (or sometimes both) while the other hand remains on the hilt. This transforms the sword from a purely cutting/slashing weapon into a more precise and powerful thrusting weapon and a lever for grappling. Contrary to intuition, this was a common and practical technique. Medieval swords were not razor-sharp along their entire length. The portion of the blade closer to the hilt (the “forte”) was often left less sharp or even blunt to allow for safe gripping, especially when wearing gloves. Why Did Fighters Use Half-Swording? Increased Control and Precision for Thrusting: This is the primary reason. By holding the blade, the fighter can guide the point with pinpoint accuracy, like a spear. This was crucial in armored combat (harness fencing), where the goal was to thrust the sword’s point into the gaps and openings of plate armor (armpits, visor slits, groin, etc.). The precision from half-swording made this possible.
