Anyone who has played the previous entry will be familiar with the gameplay, though in The Surge 2 it comes with some upgrades (injection system, drone mechanics, material conversion, etc.) and downgrades (class and weapon balance, finicky block system, etc.). The level design is much better this time around, but it is still quite easy to get lost or forget certain shortcuts because of how interwoven the paths are. A holdover from the first game, no doubt, but props for managing a noticeable improvement. For the most part enemies are fun to fight, but unless you play a lighter class they can often be beaten late-game via brute force and spamming injections. On that note, the bosses are largely serviceable with the exception of The Delver, which was a joy to battle. I could go on about other parts (graphics and atmosphere are somehow downgraded), but I’ll cut it short because the disappointment is still fresh – the overarching narrative is threadbare and occasionally nonsensical. The game lacks the basic and straightforward focus its predecessor had in Warren and his quest to figure out his circumstance. If you’re willing to forego a coherent story and atmosphere, the Surge 2 provides lots of gameplay flexibility and some amusing NPC interactions. Otherwise, this sequel is largely forgettable, unfortunately.

The game has to it a new protagonist who you can customize on top of picking the outfit they wear. There’s also new enemies, new armors, and new weapons on top of an improved combat system. Executions are still good and brutal and you get a variety of side quest that can be very rewarding. weapons gained from boss fights are still the same in that you have both the regular version and the improved version, the latter of which can be gained if you kill the boss in certain conditions. Doing the latter will not only net you a better version of the bosses weapon, but certain merchants in the game can sell you the regular version of the boss weapon for free. And on top of that, you also get a new status effect that ties in with one of the new enemy types you go up against. The cons that come with the game is the parrying system. One last con is that some parts of the game can be buggy such as one of the encounters in the game you get is against some elite soldiers who will try to attack you at key areas. If you die to them, they disappear, if you face the final soldier in a final encounter but went through a certain entrance, he won’t appear despite his dialogue appearing. The Surge 2 ?️
