SRW Y has made a lot of quality of life changes compared to previous games with the best change being that the game is actually somewhat challenging compared to the other SRW games on steam which are really easy even on the hardest difficulties. Y’s difficulty spike at the beginning of chapter 2 is also something to be careful of as if you aren’t, great mazinger WILL get shot down by the silly 70s space squids. The increased difficulty also means that terrain actually matters now and positioning could mean life or death. Getter Kahn (3) is also really strong and reliable especially in the early game, I’d even say that it’s the strongest getter 3 in the series history.

The game also refines the “choose your own adventure” aspect from 30 by reducing the amount of bloat/filler missions. This was definitely a step in the right direction as it also allows the story to be more streamlined and the crossover elements probably became easier to write and program as the writers don’t need to account for 10 different missions that may or may not have happened. There’s even a submenu that shows what mission leads into another mission which is great for those who would rather complete one mission chain at a time.
