Judging by the first impressions, it is what it seems: an edgy low-budget jRPG with some neat ideas and uneven execution. I think I liked the beginnings of both Caligula Effects more because of the story, characters and aesthetics, but Monark is fine too. I’m mostly annoyed by the graphics which look terrible even on the highest settings. Locations are empty and not detailed, characters look like crude dolls, even stylish filters can’t entirely hide this. Maybe I should have sticked with Switch where it’s easier to neglect such things because of the portable mode.

The game has a really nice atmosphere though, even weird low-FPS pre-rendered cutscenes add some sort of PS1 charm to it. I really do love NIS for bringing such titles to us, but maybe it would be better to not do the English dubbing and sell the game at a lower price point, at least 40$. But hey, if you’re like me and you enjoy edgy nonstandard weird jRPG that sometimes.I just started playing the game, but so far it is fun and I am enjoying myself. I am a big fan of JRPG’s and I have played many different ones. I have been a bit disappointed with the JRPG’s that I have played recently, but this one seems to scratch that itch that I have had for a good JRPG. I am also happy that they got the mouse and keyboard controls right
