It pains me to say that I didn’t enjoy this very much. There is so much good here. The art, the music, the acting, and the palpable passion and heart with which this was made. But sadly, it’s simply not a good metroidvania. The levels are sparse, with no challenge in traversal, and effectively no exploration – what there is provides minimal rewards. There is never a compelling reason to return to old areas, and even if I wanted to, no way of tracking anything on the map. Combat is fine, and can be enjoyable when it’s more challenging. But some of the boss and encounter designs are lessons in frustration, with cheap and unpredictable deaths which left me rolling my eyes more often than feeling a sense of achievement. Ultimately though, I can’t bring myself to give this a thumbs down. There is so much love here, and I have great respect for Abubakar Salim’s vision. I hope this team can keep going and improve their core game design next time.
