Starless Abyss has a lot of comparisons to Slay the Spire and FTL, and for good reason: it blends all the best elements of other roguelike deckbuilders into a refined package, and then applies a few layers of thick conceptual paint with its eldritch horror / hard science fiction setting. The gameplay loop will be familiar to anyone with a little experience in strategy or deckbuilding games: you start off by choosing from an array of characters (optionally made all available up front through a menu setting), each with their own strengths and weaknesses. Prior to each combat encounter, you will choose the type of reward that you want to receive for winning. These range from new cards, to ship upgrades, to tokens used to enhance your odds in one of the game’s many random encounter story events. While you can’t see PRECISELY what you’ll be getting, knowing ahead of time what to expect for surviving combat gives a feeling of being in control of your build– you can focus on acquiring more cards to use in combat,
