A massacre that wiped out a village that has been left in the dust for more than ten years, a shuttle between reality and dreams. As Chen Xi returns to the ruined village, the truth of two seemingly unrelated cases is revealed…In the game, players are forced to fall between reality and dreams; I get to have a controversial take. Before I begin I’ll preface by saying that no, I don’t hate the developers nor hate the game and that it’s very possible I just don’t get it and I’ll like Neva more. I strongly suspect that Gris wasn’t made for an people like myself. Intellectually I’m tracking with the metaphors they’re using here but emotionally the game isn’t resonating with me, and this is from somebody who typically enjoys games that mingle difficult subjects into the gameplay and make you feel it viscerally (Outer Wilds is an incredible example of this, and I won’t elaborate further). I’m also not critical of the music, sound design, art, and animations of the game either which were all great. So. Why don’t I recommend it then? Ultimately my two main problems boil down to the gameplay being boring, and the story being so lost in metaphor that it forgets to ground itself in something relatable. Gameplay wise, there’s no new or interesting ground being tread here – this is about as standard a puzzle platformer as you’ll get and it is not meant to be challenging. There were a few moments where I thought “That’s the solution? Okay then.” and moved right along, as opposed to recent experience in another puzzler recently (Talos Principle 2) was “Oh! That’s a very clever puzzle, that was fun”. That coupled with being a 2-3 hr long game, there’s not much to write about here, especially with the first hour of that not being terribly engaging because you are still unlocking the things that will make it interesting. The puzzles incorporate a large number of traditional Chinese folklore elements, such as: Five Elements, Bagua, Yin and Yang, etc… Connect known clues and understand the plot and entries to affect scene changes by dragging, combining, and rotating text entries; Solve every puzzle in the game and uncover the truth.
